27 social housing units at Walkin St., Kilkenny nears completion

27 UNIT SOCIAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT WALKIN ST. KILKENNY NEARS COMPLETION

Acquired in 2014 with lapsed planning permission, Oaklee Housing has transformed what was a derelict site into an architect designed twenty-seven unit social housing scheme.

Located at the landmark junction between Walkin St. and Callan St., Walkinslough Court is a four-storey development and mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments with six being fully accessible. It also offers a community centre, south facing landscaped courtyard and amenity space.

‘We are very proud to see this development come to life,” says Oaklee Housing Chief Executive, Sharon Cosgrove. “Oaklee’s goal is to provide high quality modern homes and to help build communities. Delivering Walkinslough Court assists us in achieving that goal.”

After visiting the new scheme of 27 apartments, Director of Services Mary Mulholland acknowledged ‘the importance of the Rebuilding Ireland Programme in funding such schemes and welcomed the addition of one and two bed apartments already in short supply in Kilkenny City’.

Visiting the site today, Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy commented, “The Government is absolutely committed to helping people and families in need of a home, and it really encourages me when I can help out with occasions like today. The development of this site into high-quality homes will not only have an impact on its new residents but will benefit the community as a whole. Housing Bodies such as Oaklee Housing are playing a critical role in providing social homes in tandem with local authorities, and this scheme here today shows the real progress on the ground being achieved to address the challenges we face in the housing sector.”

Designed and being built by Kilkenny based Brian Dunlop Architects and Ormond Construction, the development is due for completion in December 2019 and has been funded by both CALF and HFA.

Oaklee Housing is an Approved Housing Body (AHB) established in 2000 to deliver high quality modern homes for older people, families, mature single people and people with complex needs. Collaborating with its statutory and voluntary partners they have rapidly grown their presence across Ireland to become one of Ireland’s most ambitious providers of customer-focused housing and support services. Oaklee Housing is a member of the Choice Housing Group and the Irish Council for Social Housing.
